    Bleaching of Sunflower Waste Oil by Absorption on Activated Carbon and Improved by Ozonisation

    The present investigation attempts to bleach the sunflower waste oil which can be reused for many industrial applications. A comprehensive bleaching technology developed with activated carbon and liquid ozone under laboratory condition. Laboratory bleaching was performed with different concentrations of activated carbon (w/v) in a round bottom flask under a vacuum. During the bleaching process, coloring pigments like carotenoids, chlorophylls, gossypol, peroxides and other impurities are removed from the edible oil using activated carbon. The bleached oil was retreated with different concentrations of liquid ozone and incubated at room temperature (270C) for 24 to 120 hrs. The retreated oil samples were drawn at every interval of 24 hrs, analyzed and the bleaching capacity were measured with UV-VIS Spectrometer to measure light absorbance in the visible region at 455 nm. The absorbance values decreased with respect to the increased mass of activated carbon (w/v in %) and liquid ozone. Bleaching of crude oil with activated carbon and liquid ozone are affordable method for sunflower waste oil management and recycling

    Impact assessment of heavy metals pollution of Vartur lake, Bangalore

    The unscientific disposal of wastes and pollution in urban water bodies has caused immense problems not only to human beings but also to the aquatic biodiversity. Assessment of heavy metals in Vartur Lake, Bangalore, revealed that Cadmium (Cd), Cobalt (Co), Chromium (Cr), Nickel (Ni), and Lead (Pb) all exceeded drinking water standards. Nevertheless, Chromium (Cr) exceeded the CPCB’s tolerance limits for water bodies subjected to effluent discharge. In Eichornia crassipes, Cd, Co, Cr, and Ni were critical. In the sediments, Cadmium (Cd) and Nickel (Ni) exceeded the Probable Effect Level (PEL). Sediment Geo-accumulation Index of the lake showed moderate contamination with Mn, Cu, and Pb. Cr had the highest plant/sediments metal concentration factor even though its bioavailability in plants (71.5 ppm) was lower compared to Manganese (192.3 ppm). This calls for immediate action to be implemented to carry out necessary environmental mitigation measures for the lake

    This study was mainly focused upon the impact of heavy metals pollution (Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in aquatic macrophytes of the littoral zones of the lakes of Bangalore Urban region. The heavy metals concns. were as follows: Manganese (257.6 ± 39.6) ppm; Lead (66 ± 12.5)​ppm; Chromium (64.9 ± 6.2)​; Nickel (42.3 ± 3.2)​, Cobalt (18.8 ± 4.0) and Cadmium (4.7 ± 0.7)​. Copper, Manganese and Zinc were largely within normal range while Chromium, Lead, Cobalt and Nickel were in crit. range.     Antioxidants and antioxidant activity common eight banana varieties in Kerala

    The objective of this research were to study antioxidants and antioxidant compounds from selected eight varieties of banana and the antioxidant activity were analysed using two methods such as total antioxidant activity and DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) radical scavenging activity using different solvents such as petroleum ether, methanol and water. In the present study revealed that variety Red banana showed highest β carotene and (8.53 µg/100g). Ascorbic acid content of banana varieties ranged between 1.52 - 5.35 mg/100g. Highest ascorbic acid content was noticed in Red banana (5.35 mg). Highest dopamine content was exhibited in variety Robusta (13.3 mg/100g) and lowest was found in variety Rasakadali (3.2mg/100g). The total antioxidant activity revealed that variety Robusta had the highest DPPH activity with an IC50 value of 43.6 µg/ ml in petroleum ether solvent. With regard to total antioxidant activity, variety Padatti exhibited highest activity with an IC50 value of 41.2 µg/ ml in petroleum ether while variety Rasakadali (48.4) and Poovan (48.4) showed maximum activity in methanol followed by variety Red banana with an IC50 value of 44.4 µg/ ml in methanol

    Efficacy of Microalgae on the Removal of Pollutants from Wastewater

    Expansion of urban populations, increased coverage of domestic water supply and sewerage give rise to greater quantities of municipal wastewater. With the current emphasis on environmental health and water pollution issues, there is an increasing discharge of waste water in developing countries. Present technologies in developing countries for treating waste water are not sufficient and cost effective. Chlorella vulgaris is a form of green microalgae efficient for pond-based wastewater treatment, rather than bacterial strains for their ability to flocculate Chlorella vulgaris in a culture suspension. A microbial flocculent would be significantly cheaper than traditional flocculants and is believed to be less potentially toxic than synthetic polymers which are currently available. Chlorella vulgaris absorbed more pollutant compared to Chlamydomonas sp., which reveals that Chlorella vulgaris is efficient than Chlamydomonas sp., for treating waste water.

    The Association Between Social Functions and Quality of Life Among Elderly in Denpasar

    Background and purpose: Good quality of life among elderly will reduce social and economic burden among the productive age people. This study aims to determine association between social function and quality of life among elderly in Denpasar.Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 144 elderly in Denpasar who were selected by cluster sampling and data were collected by a structured interview. Data were analyzed using logistic regression to determine the relationship between quality of life of the elderly with social activities, social interactions and family functions.Results: The study showed that the proportion of lower quality of life of the elderly in Denpasar was 64.58%. Proportion of elderly with lower quality of life was found among elderly of older age, female, low education, not working, low-income and widow/widower. Multivariate analysed showed that there was an association between quality of life of elderly with gender (AOR=6.42; 95%CI: 1.79-23.0), employment (AOR=9.81; 95%CI: 2.45-39.1), health status (AOR=8.65; 95%CI: 2.57-29.02), social activities (AOR=3.85; 95%CI: 1.22-12.1), social interactions (AOR=5.59; 95%CI: 2.01-15.5) and family functions (AOR=21.7; 95%CI: 6.09-77.7)Conclusion: Good quality of life of elderly was found associated with gender, employment, health status, social activities, social interactions and family functions

    Support Vector Machine based Image Classification for Deaf and Mute People

    A hand gesture recognition system provides a natural, innovative and modern way of nonverbal communication. It has a wide area of application in human computer interaction and sign language. The whole system consists of three components: hand detection, gesture recognition and human-computer interaction (HCI) based on recognition; in the existing technique, ANFIS(adaptive neuro-fuzzy interface system) to recognize gestures and makes it attainable to identify relatively complex gestures were used. But the complexity is high and performance is low. To achieve high accuracy and high performance with less complexity, a gray illumination technique is introduced in the proposed Hand gesture recognition. Here, live video is converted into frames and resize the frame, then apply gray illumination algorithm for color balancing in order to separate the skin separately. Then morphological feature extraction operation is carried out. After that support vector machine (SVM) train and testing process are carried out for gesture recognition. Finally, the character sound is played as audio output

    High Tc Superconductors -- A Variational Theory of the Superconducting State

    We use a variational approach to gain insight into the strongly correlated d-wave superconducting state of the high Tc cuprates at T=0. We show that strong correlations lead to qualitatively different trends in pairing and phase coherence: the pairing scale decreases monotonically with hole doping while the SC order parameter shows a non-monotonic dome. We obtain detailed results for the doping-dependence of a large number of experimentally observable quantities, including the chemical potential, coherence length, momentum distribution, nodal quasiparticle weight and dispersion, incoherent features in photoemission spectra, optical spectral weight and superfluid density. Most of our results are in remarkable quantitative agreement with existing data and some of our predictions, first reported in Phys. Rev.
